City officials sue auto manufacturers because criminals steal cars

The crime situation in St. Louis is out of control. City officials reduced the number of police officers over a year ago and the city still suffers from an officer shortage. 911 calls often take hours to answer.

But instead of dealing with rising crime rates, City Hall is preparing to sue Hyundai and Kia over rampant car thefts.

On a personal note: Last week, my older brother and sister-in-law stopped at my house. They needed a place to park their car and a ride to an event in town. The garage renter said they couldn’t park their Hyundai rental cars in the parking garage because too many of them had been stolen.

So I hooked them up at their party in St. Louis.

Fox Business reported:

Car thefts have risen in St. Louis in recent months, as the city’s leadership has threatened to file lawsuits against Kia and Hyundai over an alleged defect that makes it easier to steal cars.

“Our drivers are likely to get five of these a day. ‘Only sacks and Hyundais are stealing,’” truck driver Mark Hartmann told KMOV last week of the thefts in the city.

Car thefts in St. Louis doubled this year, according to KMOV. In July alone, the city averaged about 21 thefts of Kia and Hyundai cars each day. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch previously reported that that number rose to 23 thefts each day in August.

In August, St. Louis leaders threatened to sue Hyundai and Kia, asking car companies to address a defect that allegedly makes it easier to steal cars made before 2021. KMOV reported last week that plans to sue automakers over the rise in car theft in the city are still being worked out.

“Through this letter, the city is calling on Kia and Hyundai to mitigate faulty conditions to provide thieves—including teenagers under the age of 13—with the means to destroy property, endanger city drivers and themselves, and in some cases, commit violent crimes according to the letter. Written by City Councilor Shayna Hamilton on August 19.
