Are celebrity skincare lines really good?

In theory, celebrity lines can be amazing, as they can invest in quality ingredients and thoroughly test their products to get the best possible result. So, is there a fail-safe way to know what to pick? We spoke to the experts to find out.

“It’s all about the ingredients and formulations,” said Dr. Dendy Engelman, a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist and Mohs surgeon at Shaffer Clinic in New York. “Some celebrity lines are created more carefully than others. I always look for high-quality, scientifically backed ingredients before recommending products.”

Experts say looking at the ingredients and seeing how well they match your needs is important. “You want to make sure the products contain great active ingredients like antioxidants and tried-and-true vitamins,” Engelman told HuffPost. “I also like when brands invest in clinical studies, so you know what you buy will do what they say it will.”

“Recently, skincare product marketing has been all about creating a buzz around specific active ingredients and their concentrations; think retinoids, AHAs, niacinamide and others,” Koestlin said. “This has led consumers to believe they need to build an advanced skincare routine with maximum concentrations for each activity, but every skin is different.” Focusing on the specific needs of your skin is vital to prevent you from overdoing it.

“In my opinion, no celebrity skincare line has released truly innovative formulas that differentiate themselves from the products currently on the market,” Ulu told HuffPost. “If a consumer loves a particular celebrity and is willing to try new products, a celebrity skincare line is not far from the question.”

So, are celebrity skincare lines worth it? It could be, if it covers your skincare needs. However, keep in mind that similar products may be available at a lower price from a less popular brand. If you choose the former, make sure the ingredients are suitable for your skin before buying, as you would any other product.
