8 Must-See Northern California Falls Around McCloud, Dunsmuir

For years, readers have been sending us their travel tales, snapping photos of themselves at landmarks from California to Zanzibar, and giving us tips on what to see, where to go, and how to plan. And we featured these adventures as a “Wish You Were Here” highlight in our Sunday Eat & Drink print section. That was, of course, before the outbreak of the epidemic. But as the world reopens and travels in an upward direction, we’re happy to bring it back again.

Last week, the Larson family shared their epic bike and trailer ride in the US, which included nearly 950 miles of bike trails and 29 states. Now the Concorde hiker reports from the hiking trails and falls of Northern California.

You can join in the fun too. Send us a photo of yourself on your latest adventure – local, local or international – to jburrell@bayareanewsgroup.com. Tell us where you are and who everyone is and where they’re from, and share a travel tip or two to help your fellow readers do this awesome thing, too.

I wish you were here

California Falls: Concord resident Silvia Rodriguez’s road trip to Macloud and Densmuir included eight stunning waterfalls, trails, gardens, and more. Repeat her itinerary for “two perfect days,” she says, and you’ll have time to go to Castle Crags State Park, too. There are several tracks, “but if you want to see the main event, just go to the lookout point. The view is amazing.”

Travel Tips: A four-hour drive launched the Rodriguez Waterfall trek at Bernie Falls, pictured, as the water drops 129 feet. “You can see it from the parking lot,” it says, but there’s also an easy 1.25-mile trail option. Spend the night in Burnie, then head to McCloud. “There are three waterfalls – upper, middle and lower. It’s very easy to get to (by) the trail – or stop and stop at each of them. Next, Faery Falls (2.75 miles round trip), then Hedge Creek Falls which connects to Mospria Falls (2.75). miles back and forth). Bring water shoes and a hiking pole.”

Spend your second night in Dunsmuir, she says, before heading to Whiskeytown Falls (a 3.4-mile round-trip uphill) on your way home.
