After three games on the road, the Fresno State Bulldogs are home. The Bulldogs and the San Jose State Spartans will face off at the Battle of Mountain West at 10:45 p.m. ET on Saturday at Children’s Valley Playground. Fresno State and SJSU are tied for the past six matches (3-3).
Fresno State dealt a heavy blow last week as they lost 40-20 to the Boise State Broncos. One of the things that held back Fresno State was the mediocre play of QB Logan Fife, who didn’t have his best game: Despite one touchdown, he threw two interceptions with only 5.36 yards per pass attempt.
A balanced SJSU attack led the UNLV rebels each quarter on their way to victory last Friday. The Spartans put mischief on the UNLV with a sharp 40-7 victory. With SJSU leading 23 to nothing in the first half, the match was already over. QB Chevan Cordeiro had a dynamite game for SJSU; He passed for 2 TDs and 230 yards in 27 attempts as well as dashing for 2 TDs and 104 yards.
Fresno State is expected to lose this next stage by 7.5. Those who bet on them against the points difference shouldn’t have high expectations for them because the team is 0-2 ATS when they were expected to lose.
Fresno State is now 1-4 while the Spartans sit 4-1 in reverse. A couple of defensive stats to keep in the back of your head while you watch: The Bulldogs enter the match with just 194.2 yards allowed per game on average, good for 29th in the state. But SJSU is better: They entered the competition boasting the fifth pass yards allowed per game in the state at 156. We’ll see if that edge gives SJSU a path to victory.
