Last week, the time luckPowerful Women Summit Lisa Gevelber, founder and president of Grow with Google, a program that helps people without degrees gain the skills to get into higher-paying jobs, revealed some startling stats: Of the jobs that pay more than $35,000, 77 % require a college degree, but only a third of potential workers have one.
Now, a new survey shows which publicly traded companies offer the best career mobility for people without a degree. Among the top 50 AT&T companies, only 5% of jobs require a college degree.
The American Opportunity Index ranks the 250 largest public companies in the United States, looking at employment history, job vacancies and salary sources. The Burning Glass Institute of the Philadelphia Research Center led the five-year study.
AT&T won the largest company in the index overall as well as being in the top 50 in career growth and career launch fields, but the rest are listed alphabetically rather than ranked.
The study looks not only at employment opportunities for people with degrees, but also at opportunities for advancement. This is critical as upward mobility has been decreasing across America for decades.
“Opportunity and upward movement have always been central to the American experience, but this generational trend has been in decline for decades,” Matt Siegelman, president of the Burning Glass Institute, said in a statement. “If you were born in your 1940s, you have a 90 percent chance of doing better than your parents. Today, chances are high.”
