Parkview expands virtual access to healthcare

FORT WAYNE, Indiana (WANE) — Parkview Health is expanding initiatives in the digital milieu with health care options geared toward patients at risk of injury or serious illness, the provider announced Tuesday in a statement.

A new virtual care department is designed to provide 24/7 access to clinical support at each Parkview hospital. The statement said the department is made up of experienced nurses and virtual care technicians, who work to monitor patients and play a key role in their safety, recovery and recovery.

Parkview said in the statement that digitally active nurses are critical care nurses who review patient data for early signs of sepsis development. Virtual nurses can then notify nurses and bedside caregivers to initiate sepsis intervention care, preventing serious illness or death.

In the future, the provider said they plan to evaluate more ways in which virtual nurses can increasingly participate in bedside care, including interacting with patients through television in their rooms, providing education and coordinating faster discharges.

On the other hand, virtual care technicians are caregivers specially trained in the use of continuous video monitoring, also known as “virtual sitting”, for patients at risk of falls and other harm. Virtual technicians can quickly intervene using system microphones and notify staff about concerns or emergencies.

Parkview noted that the virtual sitting service only starts with a nursing order, and no audio or video is recorded, due to patients’ rights to privacy and confidentiality.

“Virtual Care is another example of how Parkview is committed to enhancing patient experience and care environments, while controlling costs associated with care,” said Michelle Charles, Parkview’s Chief of Nursing Informatics. “Adding virtual nurses and care technicians allows our staff to focus exclusively on the needs of each patient. This team will maximize our resources and effectively monitor multiple inpatients to meet their needs more quickly.”

The Digital Care Center is home to the new Parkview Virtual Care Division as well as the Virtual Health Division, covering MyChart and Parkview OnDemand, virtual assets that have been attached to the Care Center since 2020.

A brick-and-mortar digital care center can be found within the Parkview Business and Technology Center.
