Pleasanton – Clayton Valley Charter’s defense and specials backed the Ugly Eagles football team until they began their pressing attack Friday night in Amador Valley.
But once CVC’s offense started to work, it was a sight worth watching. As his new attack spread, quarterback Christian Aguilar threw ugly quarterback for 296 yards from 317 yards in the final three quarters of a 47-14 victory.
“We’ve completely turned this offense from a heavy attack to a happy passing offense, so we still had some growing pains, but we definitely bounced back since the first two games,” said CVC coach Tim Murphy, who is using the spread as his primary attack for the first time in the His long career.
Clayton Valley started the season 0-2, but is now 3-3 overall and 1-0 in the East Bay Athletic League Mountain Division. Amador Valle fell 4-2, 0-1.
Clayton Valley Charter, 18 in the Bay Area News Group football rankings, lost two steps into his first three possessions against the No. 13 Dons. Amador Valle took advantage of the first one to lead 7-0, with Jake Goldsworthy scoring in a 1-yard run.
But the Ugly Eagles immediately responded with a 94-yard kick back for the touchdown by Micah Avery, and CVC’s Jake Dern finished off Dons’ next lead with an interception. Later in the first pair, Charles Cox III of the Ugly Eagles slipped on Amador Valley’s 30-yard line and returned the ball to the end zone for a 12-7 CVC advantage. Clayton Valley Charter had only 22 yards of total attack in the first quarter, yet had a five-point lead.
Murphy was pleased with the performance of his own bands.
“I love it,” Murphy said. “People underestimate them, and the first 10 years of my career have done how important special teams are… Special teams can make or break you, especially as you play good teams with good defenses. I was happy all the way.”
In his first possession in the second quarter, Clayton Valley extended his lead to 20-7 in a 53-yard pass from Aguilar to Davin Amos, followed by a two-point conversion managed by Marquis Richards. Amos, a petite 6-foot-3, 180-pound, finished with eight receptions for 99 yards.
Amos then picked up his second TD pass from Aguilar by ripping the ball over his left shoulder on the left corner of the end zone to receive 6 yards with seven seconds remaining in the first half. A two-point conversion by Aguilar Clayton gave Valley Charter 28-7 an advantage in the first half.
“I saw a glimpse of the ball, and then I went up and just grabbed it,” Amos said of the landing catch.
Clayton Valley Charter also produced touchdowns in the first two innings of the second half. It took seven minutes off the clock at 76 yards, which ended with a three-yard scoring by Machie Prosser. Aguilar’s final pass at 10:50 left was a 13-yard touchdown to Hank Pfeiffer, the youngster with six passes for the team’s 112-yard high in the game. Emilio Strange added eight receptions for 65 yards for CVC.
Aguilar, a senior, completed 26 of 34 pass attempts, and saw three touchdown attempts without interceptions.
Amador Valle reduced the score to 41-14 with a 19-yard touch pass from Drew Sousa to Brady Nassar and a point kick after a touch from Riley Balch with 4:59 remaining. CVC’s Hayezon Jackson ran 11 yards to get to the final points of the game.
Goldsworthy had 57 yards high for Amador Valley’s game.
