The Santa Clara Valley wineries will host a harvest celebration called Vine-to-Wine on Sunday, October 23, 1-4 p.m., at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga. Award-winning wines from more than 20 wineries, including sparkling and dessert wines, will be served in the private Bubbly Bar. Gourmet Bites will be offered by Kneaded Bread & Catering, a not-for-profit, no-cost culinary arts apprenticeship program for youth and youth in Santa Clara County.
A private VIP experience begins at noon, with a reserve tasting led by Matthew Kanner, who has been named Sommeliers of the Year by Food & Wine Magazine and one of the 40 Under 40 Tastemakers for all wine lovers. A 30-minute tour of the historic Paul Masson Winery will follow a tasting.
The marketplace at the event will feature wine barrel furniture and home decor from Campbell’s Barrel Dreams Company, laser-treated wood products from California Craft House and Coravin wine preservation products. The soundtrack will feature two local favorites, Matt Masih and The Messengers, singer-songwriter Duo.
Vine to-Wine tickets cost $125 at Eventbrite.com.
Among the new wineries flocking to the Vine-to-Wine event are L&M Vineyard (Gilroy) and Moose Mountain Vineyard (Morgan Hill). L&M is owned by Mandy Emas, a former teacher in San Jose, and Larry Emas, a professional law enforcement officer for the Santa Clara Sheriff’s Department, who purchased a home in San Ysidro County in Gilroy that just happened to be with a vineyard and winery equipment. This lovely spot has great views and is noteworthy for the couple’s restrained style on Cabernet Sauvignon estate and Cabernet Franc with red fruits and pines from a neighboring vineyard.
Moose Mountain Vineyard is owned by vineyard manager and winemaker Dr. Richard Schmidt, a fertility specialist whose office is located in Mountain View. Schmidt is betting big on the tana, a grape more associated with Uruguay than the Santa Clara Valley. The structure and fruit of the 2019 Moose Mountain tannat are impressive, and they also make great marlottes.
Schmidt’s 26-acre parcel contains 14 acres of vines, including the five main Bordeaux varieties along with tempranillo, small sira, and tanat, which is his favorite. He also cultivated Italian varieties, including Nebbiolo and Aglianico. The entire building is solar powered, and gets plenty of sunshine, as evidenced by its thriving vegetable garden, olive trees, and many avocados ripening at different times. It also has a bed and breakfast overlooking the vineyard. Since Schmidt is vegetarian, avocado toast and whole-grain muffins are on the breakfast menu.
In other news: The Alamitos vineyard in the Almaden Valley has turned into a new winemaker, someone you may all know. Owner Sean Coleman tells us that longtime Cinnabar winemaker George Trucatto is now the Alamitos registered winemaker.
Celebrating October as Merlot Month, sample frequently abused grapes at a tasting of 10 Livermore Valley winemakers’ merlots, Saturday, October 15, 1-4 p.m. “Hello, Merlot!” It will take place in the beautiful Bankhead Theatre, where guests can reclaim their faith in the resilient and enduring magic of miles of grapes notorious for tossing but secretly enjoyed on the ‘Sideways’.
Participating wineries include Cuda Ridge Wines, Fenestra Winery, Las Positas Vineyards, McGrail Vineyards, Nottingham Cellars, Page Mill Winery, Retzlaff Vineyards, Rodrigue Molyneaux Winery, Rosa Fierro Cellars, and Wood Family Vineyards. Tickets are $25 at https://livermorearts.org/events/hello-merlot or $30 at the door.
