TikToker Chris Olsen celebrates 5 years of sobriety

Chris has opened up about his struggles with addiction before, sharing in a 2021 YouTube video that things “really went downhill” in the summer leading up to his sophomore year.

“I realized I couldn’t sleep unless I was under the influence of something,” said the creator, who previously shared that he went to rehab for 30 days in high school. “I would get really anxious and literally feel antsy and nasty about something because I was like, ‘I need to get out of myself. “I couldn’t stand feeling my feelings at that point, and I was so frustrated with myself, taking drugs and alcohol was such an escape.”

Chris noted that his battle with drugs and alcohol continued to get “very bad” after school started, and his family and roommate were concerned. They ended up intervening, he added, with each reading messages sharing how Chris’ addiction affected their lives and what they would do if he refused to get help.

“My dad’s message was that I wouldn’t be part of the family anymore and they wouldn’t pay for school or the apartment,” he recalls. “So I would basically be on the street.”

Chris said he collapsed after that. “This is just a moment you never forget,” he said. “Everyone who loves you in their life – loves you so much that they have to tell you that they can’t see you go on like this. They know you’re better than that, and they can’t keep enabling this behavior. I look back now and I’m so grateful they did something like this. Like because as hard as it was for me to hear, I can’t imagine how hard it would be to say that to someone he loves so much.”
