Yesterday, the White House COVID-19 Response Coordinator Dr. Ashish Jha, Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Dr. Rochelle Wallinsky, and US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy met with health system and hospital leaders to discuss the importance of acting aggressively This fall to protect their patients, healthcare workers, and communities from COVID-19 and influenza. Administration officials have reported that while our nation has made tremendous progress on COVID-19, there is more work to be done before winter, when infectious diseases like COVID-19 and influenza are spreading most rapidly. Administration officials emphasized that there have been spikes in COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths this past winter straining the healthcare and hospital workforces, but it doesn’t have to be that way this year if everyone does their part and uses our tools now. Saving lives, including updated COVID-19 vaccines, flu shots, and highly effective treatments for COVID-19. The discussion focused on steps hospitals and health systems can take to help ensure all Americans, including health care workers, get an updated COVID-19 vaccine this fall, and encourage people to get tested and seek treatment when they get sick — steps that will provide lives, reduce the burden on the health care system, reduce disruptions in daily life, and help the United States effectively manage COVID-19. The meeting also included a discussion of the administration’s gratitude to health care workers on the front lines for their heroic efforts in the fight against COVID-19, as well as the physical, emotional and mental toll the virus has taken on America’s health care workforce, and the importance of addressing it. Health care worker fatigue.
