With control of the House now within the expected margin of error, minority leader Kevin McCarthy has taken it upon himself to make promises he will never be able to keep.
McCarthy’s last promise was to cancel the hiring of more IRS employees:
McCarthy, while rolling out the agenda in the Capitol, says that if the GOP takes over the house, the IRS expansion will be rescinded on the first day they take control.
– Jake Sherman September 29, 2022
The problem is that even if Republicans regain a majority in the House, repealing the IRS expansion will never pass the Senate, which will likely remain in control of Democrats, and President Biden will never sign it into law.
McCarthy’s promise makes absolutely no sense. Kevin McCarthy is acting as if he has the power to undo Biden’s accomplishments when the truth is that even if Republicans get the House back, the majority will likely be small and Democrats will still control the Senate and White House. .
Outside of impeaching Biden and causing a government shutdown or default, there are few big moves House Republicans will be able to make on their own. The Republican majority in the House of Representatives can block budget bills and affect funding, but these are the kinds of issues that get voters fired up to go to the polls.
Kevin McCarthy is proposing changes he won’t be able to make, which is an excellent way for Republicans to lose the House by 2024.
