Hackers who hit the Los Angeles Unified Schools District (LAUSD) with ransomware over Labor Day weekend issued a ransom demand, according to the district administrator.
On Tuesday, supervisor Alberto Carvalho told Los Angeles Times A request was made but the district did not respond. Carvalho refused to disclose the amount requested.
The extortion attempt represents an inevitable escalation in the ransomware attack – which targeted the country’s second-largest school district just as students began returning after summer holidays – and raises questions about sensitive information the hackers might have been able to obtain.
