EXCLUSIVE: Jackie Shroff talks why he signed up to play the ghost again in Atithi Bhooto Bhava

It’s been a minute since we’ve seen Jackie Shroff in a movie. The Bollywood star has earned a lot of love from audiences over the years for his decades-long blockbuster movies and for his real-life off-screen persona. In his last film, he plays a new and at the same time familiar character – a ghost. Titled Atithi Bhooto Bhava, directed by Hardik Gajjar starred Pratik Gandhi and Sharmin Segal in pivotal roles. The film evokes a recall of Shroff’s previous work as he plays Makhan Singh, a wandering spirit longing to reconnect with his mortal lover. But that wasn’t the only reason he signed up to play Spirit Connected to Earth. In an exclusive interview with Filmfare, Jackie Shroff revealed what made him choose the role.

Speaking of the story of Atithi Bhutto Bhava, he explained, “The man came back from the afterlife as a ghost to find his love and comes to the house of a man who cannot express love. It is amazing. So there are two contrasting personalities – one who seeks his love while the other has love but cannot express it. He does not think it necessary to express love.”

Recalling his days in Bhoot Unkle (2006), he said, “I thought about it when they showed me the movie and said it was a ghost role. I said ‘Wow I did Bhoot Unkle’ and that’s why I wanted to do this. Second, they told me that Prateek Gandhi is in the movie.” And I said I saw him as an actor. He’s cool. I know he wouldn’t touch a movie if he didn’t like the content. It was the second reason.”

“The third reason is that it is about a man who died and came back only to see his love once. All these things made me say yes. Director Hardik Gajjar treated us beautifully like a father to a child even though he is at my son’s age. But aajkal ke bacche baap bangaye hai haha “, he added.
