She said, “I don’t think I own the language until I know what was going on. It came too late for me now, it’s great now that I really am. And it has given way so creatively to let go of all that I’ve been hiding.”
“You don’t realize you’re doing it, and you put a lot of energy behind it — once you take the energy away from hiding something that’s a part of you that you can’t hide, you can put it somewhere else.”
Cynthia also said, before admitting that she was a weirdo, she could tell that something was “different” about her – but she couldn’t say what it was.
“What do I call this? What do I say about it?” Cynthia remembered the feeling. “I think sometimes we assume that every eccentric person knows this from the start.”
“Most of us know that, but we don’t necessarily know the language until someone says, ‘Hey, these are words you might want to use. These are the expressions you may want to use. Here’s some space for you so you can talk about yourself without someone else telling you.”
