Talking to Atlantic OceanConstance claimed that “harassment and intimidation” occurred during her first two seasons on the show, but said she chose not to speak at the time due to the sitcom’s success.
“I had a traumatic experience in my first few years on this show,” she shared, and no one knew about it because this show was historically for Asian Americans. It was the only show on network television in over 20 years to represent Asian Americans, and I didn’t want to discredit the only show we had.”
She continued, “So, I kept my mouth shut for a very long time about a lot of sexual harassment and intimidation that I received in the first two seasons of the show.” Because after the first two seasons, it was a success, once I was no longer afraid of losing my job, that was when I was able to start saying “no” to harassment, and “no” to being bullied by this particular product.
“So I thought:” You know what? I have dealt with it. Nobody has to know. You don’t have to discredit this Asian American product. You don’t have to discredit the show. “
But Constance said that eventually, that pent-up pain emerged. She added, “The thing is, bad vibes don’t go away just because you’re going to. They inevitably come up,” citing this as the reason for her angry tweets that went viral when she renewed the show. 2019.
“I posted some lewd and reckless tweets that ignited a pile of hate towards me because I had just had a hit movie, Crazy Rich Asians, so it looked really bad from the outside. “Oh, she thinks she’s a big movie star,” when it really was, I wanted a new roster since I didn’t have to start a show with all those memories of abuse. “
“Because every day — so few people know what was going on and they go to work every day and see those people who know he’s been sexually harassing me as a friend, I feel betrayed every time,” Constance said, the voice started to crack. “So we have to see that at work every day – and of course, I don’t blame them because he can fire them too, right? Everyone is looking for their own business, but it felt like a betrayal.”
However, Constance said her issues were never with the crew or the show itself. “I loved everyone on this crew and loved working on this show, but it had a history of abuse that started with it,” she said.
“And though I dealt with it two years later, I was looking forward to a clean slate, so I feel that those tweets that came up were the emotions I suppressed, which I thought I would get out otherwise, negatively affected my career.”
“But in many ways, it positively impacted me personally because it made me take a break from my career, made me go to therapy to understand it, and ultimately made me come out better,” she concluded.
