A highway worker was killed with his car on the North Shore of Tahoe

The California Highway Patrol said a car fatally hit a road worker Monday night on the north shore of Lake Tahoe, and the driver was suspected of being drunk.

The accident occurred around 10:44 p.m. on North Lake Boulevard (Highway 28) on Sahara Drive, in the Baton Beach area of Carnelian Bay.

According to the CHP, a man from Tahoma was heading west on the highway in a Subaru Forester. Road construction was underway at the intersection with Sahara and there were one-way traffic controls, with a worker directing westbound vehicles to the opposite lane.

The Subaru driver didn’t seem to notice the lane closing until it was too late. The car collided with the worker and then collided with a dump truck and an excavator.

The worker was declared dead at the scene of the accident. The driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and was taken to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Station in Truckee.

North Lake Boulevard remained closed at this location until about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. It reopened with one-way traffic controls for the building.
