Port of Auckland to buy renewable energy

(BCN) — The Port of Auckland will continue to purchase renewable energy from the East Bay Municipal Utilities District, the Auckland Board of Port Commissioners decided last week. For the past 10 years, the port has been procuring power that comes from the power plant with a sewage treatment plant in the utility area. This latest decision ensures that the port will continue to use this capacity for the next 2.5 years.

This agreement will help the port to bypass regulatory requirements for renewables in the future, said Jared Carpenter, Director of Facilities Management at the Port of Auckland. “This is good for our community and continues our valuable partnership with EBMUD,” Carpenter said in a statement.

In 2020, the port’s total energy supply mix comprised 70.4% of renewable resources, of which 20.3% were from EBMUD, and 12.8% from large hydroelectric generators for a total of 83.2% of the energy supplied from non-carbon resources.

“EBMUD’s sewage treatment plant at the base of Bay Bridge is more than just a treatment plant — it’s a green plant, where organic waste, like food scraps, is converted into renewable energy,” said Doug Lenny, CEO of EBMUD. .

“EBMUD is pleased that its surplus renewable electricity will continue to be used locally to benefit the greater Auckland community.”
