It’s been nearly two years since Netflix released a new season of the crownBut now we’re closer than ever to new episodes, a new cast, and more.
the crown Season five will begin in the 1990s, during a decade described as “the royal family’s biggest challenge yet,” with political and personal events that will largely shape Queen Elizabeth II’s reign.
During this new season, the 40th anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II approaches, allowing her to reflect on the nine prime ministers she has had so far, the emergence of mass television, also known as the 24-hour news cycle, and what is being described as the “twilight of the British Empire”.
During this period, Queen Elizabeth II experienced the collapse of the Soviet Union, the transfer of sovereignty in Hong Kong which “marked a seismic shift in the international system”, and other political changes, all while everything was changing in the United Kingdom as well.
On a personal level the crown Season 5 will explore Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s charged relationship as Charles pressures Queen Elizabeth II to allow him to divorce Diana.
With the spread of rumors about the status of Charles and Diana’s relationship, media scrutiny of Diana intensified in particular, when she decided to break family protocol and publish a book that undermines public support for Charles and exposes cracks in the House of Windsor.
And as if that wasn’t enough already, the crown Season 5 will feature Mohamed Al-Fayed and his son Dodi, who are looking forward to having a “seat at the royal table,” according to the official Netflix description.
Of course, anyone who knows anything about the history of the royal family knows that we are approaching the tragic death of Princess Diana alongside Dodi Fayed in 1997.
The trailer gives us a first look at the new cast at work with Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II, Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, Leslie Manville as Princess Margaret, Dominic West as Prince Charles, and Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana.
Of course, Imelda Staunton’s portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II marks the third change for the role in the show’s history. The role was previously played by Claire Foy and Olivia Colman, both of whom won Emmy Awards for their work.
As mentioned earlier, this period in the royal family’s history has undergone a lot of press, from TV news to tabloids and more, so it’s crazy to see some of the most famous images and moments recreated in this trailer alone.
Like, look side by side between Elizabeth Debicki and Princess Diana in the famous black “revenge dress” from 1994.
Anyway, I’m really excited to watch the crown Season 5 and I just know these actors will perfectly bring this period of royal family history to life.
