The reason Marine officials did not initially announce Bong’s death was that his family needed time to mourn his loss, said Marines Captain Joshua Collins, a spokesman for the Marine Corps Recruitment Depot in San Diego.
“We are focused on supporting Pfc. Bong loved ones during this difficult time,” Collins said on Tuesday. “Wanting to provide family privacy for grieving, Pfc asked. By arranging Bong’s affairs, we delayed publishing any information until the family confirmed that they were comfortable with the news.”
Little information about the circumstances surrounding Bong’s death is publicly available. Collins said an investigation into the incident is underway.
“At this time, we can only confirm that Pfc. Bong lost consciousness and became unresponsive while conducting a scheduled training aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton earlier that evening,” Collins said. “All activities are conducted in accordance with current directions and procedures to provide a controlled environment and to maximize the safety of all recruits and permanent staff.”
