UBCM hosts ‘Reimagining Healthcare in British Columbia’ – Saanich News

You’ll find today’s BC podcast streaming on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, iHeart, and Google.

Reimagining healthcare in British Columbia was the topic of one of the plenary sessions at the recent BC Federation of Municipalities meeting.

BC communities and BC residents face unprecedented challenges with the healthcare system, which include emergency room closures, long wait times for surgery, difficulties finding a family doctor, problems with hiring and retaining healthcare professionals and irregular access to ambulance services.

In this edition of Today in BC, host Peter McCauley says: “This podcast will be longer than usual, (although part of the session has been edited for time and content) but we thought the topic and discussion were timely, given the state’s healthcare in British Columbia and I wanted to offer you the opportunity to listen to performances.”

Attending mayors and councillors from across the province, the session explored how these issues affect communities in all areas of British Columbia, in both urban and rural contexts; Committee members discussed ideas for transforming the health care system in the governorate.

Port McNeil Mayor Gabi Wikstrom, Clearwater Mayor Merlin Blackwell and Vancouver Coon. Pete Fry spoke about the impact of the disruptions on the health care system and how they affect the population.

A series of medical experts also provided transformative solutions to the problems being discussed.

The session was hosted by Laurey-Anne Roodenburg, Cornell City Council Member, and President of UBCM. The session began with a speech by Adrian Dix, British Columbia’s Minister of Health.
