The casual, relaxed racism that permeated Trump’s dark, dark soul has always been shockingly open behind closed doors. His racism was serious enough that Trump-era staffers became so assertive, he was on the verge of ordering Trump to withdraw, according to Rolling Stone’s latest review of Maggie Haberman’s book of trust. Trump assumed that the employees of color were waiters:
“Trump told staff members of Senator Chuck Schumer, Representative Nancy Pelosi and others “why not get” the food, according to a new book by New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman, a trustee.
Imagine the humiliation felt by the Trump staff (most of them) and imagine the anger of Schumer and Pelosi, and now try to put yourself in the shoes of those who are being asked for food. It would be almost impossible to back off and shout at Trump.
Then White House chief of staff Reince Priebus rushed to correct Trump’s remark, telling the then president that he had just addressed top congressional aides before going to find the actual waiting staff at the White House.
The best angels would like to think that Priebus was very upset and rushed into anger to address the problem. Unfortunately, that was an equally political threat. One can allow that the two are not mutually exclusive.
Trump’s note to staff is just one example of Trump’s occasional racism detailed in the pages of the man of confidence reviewed by Rolling Stone. For example, later in the same meeting, Trump told Schumer and Pelosi that his “illegal” ballots were the only reason he lost the 2016 popular vote to Hillary ClintonHaberman Report. After an awkward silence, Belsoy interjected: “I don’t think so, Mr. President.”
This is one of the most offensive and absurd Republican beliefs. If you are in the country illegally, perhaps for more than five years, with your family, who may be here legally, you will live every day under the hammer of fear that any day you will be arrested and deported. The pain is almost incalculable. So what are the odds of someone entering here illegally in a government-run election that requires a name, an address – and an ID? Doing such a thing may be seen as one of the most dangerous ways to draw attention to oneself, and therefore it would be the last thing you would do.
However, it is all too easy for Trump to simply assume that his “enemies” will vote to bury him. If illegal votes were a legitimate concern, wouldn’t the government be equally concerned about Canadians casting illegal votes?
No, it’s just typical relaxed Trump racism. It’s its default setting.
