With the Singapore Grand Prix around the corner, you should probably already be speeding up. You won’t need help from us deciding how to support your favorite teams or divers – you may be in the ring (say hi to us if you are). Regardless of team and driver loyalty (sometimes not the same, but it’s complicated), if you’re also a fan of watches, it can be difficult to reconcile your choice of personal watch with sports. Only a few brands are directly involved, and in any case Rolex has overshadowed everyone else. Fortunately, there’s a solution we love: Drivers’ Watches.
These are not always associated with team sponsors, so you don’t need to limit yourself to the likes of TAG Heuer, IWC or Richard Mille. There are other brands associated with life on the fast track (maybe just in the past) that you might collect on your own, so follow the driver’s choices. Drivers are limited by care agreements on the pieces they can wear in public, so take all of this with a pinch of salt. We also have good authority that a lot of drivers love their Rolex watches, so you’ll be in good company here. These include veterans such as Sir Jackie Stewart and Mark Webber, but also collectors such as Nico Rosberg.
Helpfully, we didn’t need to do much work on this story because the folks at Watchfinder & Co. They compiled all the watches worn by a specified number of drivers. The online merchant of pre-owned watches did this because they have related pieces in stock (surprise!) and we’re happy to match our self-interests here.
For completeness, we’ve also included Bell & Ross here, along with the BWT Alpine F1 Team’s brand kit. This watch is called the A522, which is named after the current race car. This is much more low key compared to what the French brand did when the team was wearing the Renault uniform. Yes, Bell & Ross was with what is today BWT Alpine when it was Renault in 2016.
However, you can take a quick look at the watches of these six Formula One drivers, curated by Watchfinder & Co.
Lewis Hamilton
One of the few active drivers who need no introduction, Lewis Hamilton is an IWC man through and through. He even wore three IWC watches simultaneously in protest of the recent FIA ban on drivers wearing jewelry. Here’s what we know he’s wearing: Big Pilot’s Watch, Big Pilot’s Watch Top Gun Mojave Desert, and Pilot’s Chronograph 41. This year, IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 Edition is wearing the new “Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team.”
Daniel Ricciardo
Daniel Ricciardo is no longer a McLaren guy after this season, but he is nonetheless strongly associated with collecting watches because of his RM 50-03 Split Seconds Tourbillon Chronograph, which is worth over US$1.2 million. Weighing less than 40 grams, it’s the lightest thing money can buy, while being 200 times stronger than steel. The new TPT Graph material is responsible for both weight and strength. We’ll see if this Richard Mille model stays with Ricciardo because the brand is McLaren’s sponsor.
Max Verstappen
The defending world champion, Max Verstappen, has a checkered past when it comes to watches. Two years ago, we were tickled to discover the special edition TAG Heuer Max Verstappen, and Watchfinder & Co. reminded us. That this was the first mechanical watch bearing the Verstappen name. Verstappen is also the owner of the TAG Heuer Monaco Titanium, and wore the beloved Monaco Dark Lord at this year’s Monaco Grand Prix.
Sergio Perez
Unsurprisingly, Sergio Perez is also one of TAG Heuer’s men, given that he is Verstappen’s teammate at Red Bull. The Mexican driver has been linked to the TAG Heuer Connected smartwatch by Watchfinder & Co. , despite wearing his own Carrera Tourbillon Sergio Pérez version when he won this year’s Monaco Grand Prix. Well, this watch is not on any pre-owned dealer’s list, but the Connected watch is. Having said that, we recommend the Carrera Tourbillon as an important watch, even in the basic collection
Charles Leclerc
Known for being the youngest driver to win a race with Scuderia Ferrari, Charles Leclerc is also a Richard Mille brand ambassador. Leclerc is the real deal, as the red and white RM 67-02 is made in Monaco (Leclerc is from Monaco). We can’t imagine that there are many Richard Mille models at pre-owned dealers, at least at a reasonable price for the RRP, but it’s worth checking out. A bargain on Richard Mille – that is, Richard Mill – is well worth having.
Zhou Guanyu
Zhou Guanyu is the first Chinese Formula One driver, and he is also the Hublot brand ambassador. He joined the Alfa Romeo racing team for the soon-to-be-concluded 2022 season, and is set to continue with the team. According to Watchfinder & Co. It is currently known as the Hublot Spirit of Big Bang Carbon Gold Tiger watch, but is also associated with other Hublot Big Bang watches.
