Children of the ’80s and other generations mourn the passing of hip-hop legend Coolio. TMZ was the first to report on Wednesday night that Collio had passed away at the age of 59.
Authorities were called to a home in Los Angeles around 4 p.m. local time Wednesday afternoon due to a medical emergency. According to TMZ, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The artist was reportedly visiting a friend upon his death. No evil game or drugs were involved in his tragic passing.
“Coleo’s longtime manager, Garz, says that Coolio went to the bathroom at his friend’s house, but when he hadn’t come out after a while…the friend kept calling him, and eventually went in and found him lying on the floor.”
TMZ reports on Coolio’s death
When news of his tragic death broke, the Chicago Cubs paid tribute to Coolio during their game against the Philadelphia Phillies at Wrigley Wednesday night by playing his song “A Wonderful Journey.” It was a surreal scene.
Talk about the perfect timing for this legendary song and its lyrics.
Coolio’s rise to fame and his reactions to his death in the world of sports
Also known as Artis Leon Ivey Jr. Coolio’s first major hit was “Gangsta’s Paradise” back in 1995. From a singles perspective, the 13-year-old version of this writer got into hip-hop primarily because of this legendary song. The same was true for many others of that era, which led to it becoming one of the anthems of our generation.
The Chicago Cubs’ single played Wednesday night at Wrigley, Fantastic Voyage, became a huge hit years after its release as well. He won a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance for “Gangsta’s Paradise”. He was also nominated for a Fantatic Voyage Award the previous year.
Needless to say, those who were all over the sports world from Gilles Coolio and the youngest had reactions to his tragic passing. This included the San Francisco Giants playing “Gangsta’s Paradise” during their game.
